THE ROMAN BATHS
The Hammam finds its roots in Greco-Roman culture, where it was known as thermae.
It is a place beyond time, where the scent of incense and the gentle flow of water evoke the calm of the womb. A quiet invitation to turn inward and listen to oneself. As tradition has it, the Roman Baths are composed of a series of rooms, moving gradually from warm to cool. These are spaces where caring, nurturing hands gently accompany you, helping you rediscover a sense of well-being reminiscent of childhood.
The journey begins in the apodyterium, the changing room, where one sheds not only clothes but also the weight of the outside world. Every object and thought is placed securely in a locker. Draped in a single white cloth, you prepare to embark on a path of introspection, surrender and awareness of your body.
Entering the tepidarium (34°C), you are immersed in a dreamlike atmosphere. Silhouettes fade into the mist, light dances through the steam, and the sound of flowing water creates a space untouched by time.
After a warm shower, you rest on heated marble benches while skilled hands perform warm water ablutions. These release tension, open the pores and cleanse the skin. The experience encourages complete relaxation. You may even drift into sleep or reconnect with your body through self-massage using black soap made with olive oil, which leaves the skin smooth and radiant.
Next comes the calidarium (45°C with 100% humidity), the heart of the steam bath. The intense heat expands blood vessels, improves circulation, uplifts the mood, melts away stress and fatigue, and promotes better sleep.
The moist heat acts as a natural aerosol, easing discomfort in the nose, throat and lungs. It also brings relief to rheumatic and arthritic pain, stimulates perspiration to flush out toxins and helps eliminate excess fluids. Due to the high temperature, brief sessions are recommended, alternated with moments of rest and sips of fresh water. The ritual concludes with a purifying body scrub. The entire body is vigorously exfoliated with a traditional glove and thoroughly washed, leaving the skin deeply cleansed and renewed.
